There are undeniable similarities, yes, but Neon white is not a roguelike. Both are created by independent developers with dedicated fan bases. Both put the player in death-or-more-death situations that are rooted in fast-paced gameplay. Both are characterized by distinctive character designs. (Maybe you heard about it?) Both take place in the afterlife. After all, the game shares a lot of DNA with another indie darling, a runaway success story called Hades. You would be forgiven for concluding that Neon white is still a roguelike. But there is a ubiquitous descriptor that is unique Not Part of the recipe for this game: a roguelike. Neon white is, in short, a whole bunch of stuff at once, a Skip’s Scramble of Cool Shit® from the last decades of gaming. So, sure, it’s not quite deck building in the sense of, say, Gwent or Kill the towerbut yes, cards are very important here. Or maybe a bolt action rifle that will give you a boost in speed. Or maybe there is an SMG that lets you do a Yoshi style floor pound. Let’s say you have a handgun card with the raise ability. Holding the card will allow you to use the weapon depicted while discarding it to use the ability. Each card has both a weapon and a traversal ability. The main gimmick in the game is a mechanic called “soul cards”. Each level takes anywhere from 10 seconds to two minutes, depending on how good you are, according to Esposito. Your goal, like most first person shooters, is to kill everything in your way and make it to the end of the level. Oh, and it has some honest deck construction, what to do with the card collecting mechanics (which we’ll get to in a moment). And a platformer with lots of parkour elements. ![]() After a performance at an Annapurna Interactive Shop Window ( Neon white‘s publisher) last month we now know that Neon white is a first person shooter.
